Frequently Asked Questions
When should I negotiate?
Almost always. Studies show 70%% of employers expect candidates to negotiate. The only time to skip is if the offer already exceeds your target and market rate. Even then, you can negotiate non-salary items like start date, PTO, or remote work.
What if they ask for my current salary?
In many states, it's illegal for employers to ask. If asked, redirect: "I'd prefer to focus on the value I'll bring to this role. Based on my research, the market range is $X-$Y." Never anchor to your current salary if it's below market.
How much should I counter?
Counter 10-20%% above the initial offer, as long as it's within the market range. Anchor high but reasonable. If they offer $85K and market is $90-100K, counter at $97-100K so you can "meet in the middle" at $92-95K.
